Back in San Francisco — and Back to Myself
It’s funny how a city can hold so many versions of you
San Francisco isn’t just another pin on the map for me…it’s a place tied to a whole chapter of my life. Both our girls were born here. We strolled the same streets again, and it felt good to reflect on that season.
Revisiting Old Roots in a New Season
We were only there for 36 hours, but it didn’t feel rushed. We took long walks, picnicked in the park, revisited favorite views, and reconnected with old friends. It was the kind of trip that makes you pause… not just to look back, but to appreciate where you are now.
One stop we planned was visiting our former landlord. She and her husband were an incredibly kind couple who welcomed us when we first moved to the city. They helped us feel at home during a season of so much change. We’d stayed in touch over the years and knew they had moved into an assisted living home just before the pandemic. Her husband passed during those early days of Covid, and we recently learned she had passed too. It was a quiet, grounding moment. A reminder of how much warmth and kindness can stay with you, even decades later.
New Views, Same City
It’s funny how you can live in a city and still miss so much. This time, we finally climbed the mosaic steps and soaked in views we never made time for back then. I even played piano in the middle of a park—something I never would’ve done years ago. It wasn’t for anyone but me. No audience, no rush, just a moment of stillness and sound. A soft kind of joy.
In My Gray Hair Era
That’s the thing about being in this season of life. I’m in my gray hair era… and this version of me feels lighter. Less apologetic. More grounded.
Even the little things felt easier this time. Packing was a breeze…I’ve nailed down my carry-on essentials (gray hair perk: no more dye kits or root touch-up powders!). I didn’t overthink outfits or beauty routines. I just showed up, and that was enough.
Traveling in Midlife Has Its Perks:
- You care less about impressing others and more about how the trip feels.
- You stop chasing perfect photos and start chasing moments.
- You remember to rest. And to breathe.
A Quick Stay with Character
We stayed at Hotel Zeppelin, a boutique hotel just off Union Square with a bold, rock-and-roll vibe that nods to the legendary bands that came out of the Bay Area. The location was ideal for exploring the city, and our stay included free breakfast and morning coffee in the lobby. It had just the right mix of character and convenience…perfect for a quick, comfortable stay.
If you’re planning a trip that’s equal parts ease and nostalgia, San Francisco wraps you in both. From waterfront walks to hilly neighborhoods, it’s the perfect midlife backdrop to reflect, reconnect, and recharge.
Every step we take is a step toward our true selves.
Thanks for walking part of this path with me.
